Rendering?

Hey Pete!

Love the concept of Ur site so far.

Just a question. Will there be a group for rendering on paper and online? I study interior design/ architecture so I mostly do interiors as in how to decorate it but also the architecture of a room.

I just got an iPad an am trying to learn rendering by myself as well as in paper.

Thanks Senn!

The idea is that people can create any group they like. We want to one day migrate this website to a proper app like reddit so it's more accessible. But for now, if there isn't a group already, please go ahead and make one!

This is a section that I’m working on at the moment for my part 1 final year project. What are everyone’s thoughts and opinions, what can I do better ??

Adjudication

This will be one of the most precarious processes in your architectural career. I am speaking from a UK perspective where, as it stands, to qualify as an Architect, you need to know construction law and the various common forms of contract and procurement. In most cases you'll be advising a client and if they get into hot water with a builder you will have to guide them through the adjudication process. It's a quick, legal dispute resolution process that is statutorily available to all parties in a Construction contract except for homeowners unless its in the contract.

This is something that sets us apart form other designers. We have to deal with so much more and you've really got to know your stuff when it comes to law. Every email, message that you send could come back to bite you so before you click send, imagine you're going through…

Sorry been off dealing an adjudication - which I'll post about shortly.

I'm assuming you're finishing secondary school and have some kind of art or design material to show?

I think there are a few things to cover in a portfolio: obviously some kind of artistic knowledge but you don't have to be an expert- just showing interest in say colour, form, perspective etc. Show exploration of a subject - depth of exploration is good rather than just skimming the surface of a subject. Showing how you've made decisions: if you can draw anything how did you decide on what to draw/ model etc? Rather than say, I thought it looked good, what I fluency your choice. Showing a diverse range of I fkuences is good : artist case studies, poets, engineers, archaeologists- we had students who were coming from backgrounds like maths and history degrees. Remember you're going to uni to learn architecture so you're not expected to know it all now but Showing interest and the thought processes I've mentioned above is good .

Make your pages clear and free of clutter so at a glance one can understand what it's about - a visual hierarchy will show you can organise thoughts and not just fall into making graphics.

If you upload some portfolio pages we can all comment

Is it a big problem if I don't have an imagination to design new buildings?

sketch design

In this exercise, a previous client is building a barn with a local architect but wanted our opinion on future-proofing the layout for a possible home-conversion. They felt their local architect was too much of a "yes-man" and wasn't testing the barn enough. This was an client from many years ago so I wanted to help them out and do a free sketch for them and maintain a good client relationship.

The first decision here was that it was free. This meant no more than say 20mins should be spent on it before it would feel like I'm working for nothing. 20mins for an old client, I think, is fine but if they were to ask for more, I'd make a fee proposal.

The next post will go into the internal layout but here you can see the barn and the context. The barn is the grey rectangle in the…

First floor:

With a pitched roof, you always seek to maximise head-height by rising up the stair following the slope of the roof, trying to get the 2m head room required by regs. This could happen anywhere along the length of the plan, but the local architect had a central dormer and round window proposed so aligning to this gave an opportunity for a nice view and double-height space below. Additionally, if I were to place this stair to either side of centre, it could result in more corridor space rather than living space. Wardrobes are placed at the eaves which although ok at 1.7m high at the lowest point, mean that once you put in a wardrobe of standard depth (600mm) the standing height at the front of a wardrobe would be in excess of 1.8m.

This concluded a quick 15/20min exercise and hopefully you can see how a simple layout can be justified. It is these justifications that we present to the client - a mixture of practical and emotive moves. A balance between the two is important to sell your idea: it can't all be artistic license because that is so subjective. Providing practical reasons makes your proposal stronger.
